Sanda Plantation Hideaway
An Escape to Authentic Balinese Country Side
A little private Hideaway, on the slopes of sacred Mount Batukaru. The Sanda Plantation Hideaway is a productive plantation in the small traditional village of Sanda, Pupuan, in Tabanan, in the mountains of central Bali.
We offer guests an opportunity to experience authentic Balinese country side and life, while staying in comfort in our unique semi-luxury safari-style canvas tent. The tent is tucked away in the plantation on an elevated wooden deck, offering spectacular views over the green Balian river valley and surrounding plantations and rice field, with Mount Batukaru as backdrop.
The resort lies 700 meters above sea-level, assuring fresh air and pleasant temperatures throughout the day and cool evenings and nights.

what to do
Sanda has plenty to offer for those who enjoy the outdoors and fresh clean air. You can walk and explore many well-maintained trails, leading through spectacular rice fields and lush green plantations, following clean mountain streams and rivers and sometimes to waterfalls well off the beaten track.
Bali’s second highest mountain, the ancient volcano Mount Batukaru, is still covered with some of Bali’s most pristine rain forest. Mount Batukaru is a sacred place for the locals and several good trails lead through spectacular forest to the summit, home to a small sacred temple.
If you enjoy cycling, bring your bike! There are many small roads, tracks and trails. Some perfect for a road bike, others require a mountain bike. If you prefer a trail motorbike you have plenty of options as well.
Places to explore a bit further away include several spectacular waterfalls, a Buddhist temple, traditional coffee roaster, Lake Tamblingan, Bratan and Buyan, Lovina beach on Bali’s north coast, Soka Beach in the south, the famous surf beaches in Southwest Bali and of course the spectacular UNESCO listed Jatiluwih rice fields. All reachable within maximum an hour and a half beautiful drive.
Wildlife enthusiasts and photographers don’t need to travel far. The plantations are home to a variety of birds, bats, squirrels, civets, porcupine and other small mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects. As a wildlife enthusiast and photographer myself I’ll be happy to give you some inside tips!
Wander around
Sanda and the larger Pupuan area offers some of Bali’s most spectacular and authentic rural scenery and is a hiker’s heaven. Take a relaxed and easy walk over the many concrete plantation roads and trails, or hike up and down unpaved trails deeper into the fields and plantations.
Explore around Pupuan
Nature, culture, agriculture. The district of Pupuan has a lot to offer for those who want to experience authentic rural Bali. Pupuan offers some of Bali’s most spectacular terraced rice fields, diverse scenery and most virgin rain forest. Small traditional villages are sparsely spread out on the western slopes of Bali’s second highest mountain, Batukaru.
Join the locals
To their rice fields, plantation or farm, and discover authentic rural life of the local farmers. Help with planting, harvesting or maintenance and experience authentic Balinese farmer life. An unforgettable experience for young and old!
Discover Mount Batukaru
Mount Batukaru is an ancient volcano and Bali’s second highest mountain. For the locals it’s more sacred than Mount Agung. The mountain is covered in some of Bali’s best preserved rain forest. Batukaru’s summit is relative flat and open, and therefore offers spectacular 360 degrees views across Bali, while on clear days neighboring Java and Lombok can be seen as well.
Explore local night life
When the sun sets a new world awakens, sometimes loud and clear, sometimes in almost complete silence and only visible for some trained eyes.
Owls, bats, frogs, nocturnal snakes and even porcupine and civets appear on the scene, usually in search for food. Not to mention often spectacular insects and other smaller critters. Perhaps not everybody’s cup of tea, but not less memorable.
Bird watching
The diverse scenery around Sanda and the rest of Pupuan means diversity in nature as well and the area is still fairly rich in bird life. We hear and see Green Jungle Fowl almost every day, and for instance the beautiful Javan Banded Pitta is also very common, particularly during the mating season.

Our plantation and surroundings is the perfect place for landscape and night-scape photography. The scenery is spectacular and at night there is very little light pollution. On clear nights the Milky Way is easy to see!

location
The Sanda Plantation Hideaway lies in the middle of plantations and rice fields in the Balian River valley, about 750 meters from the village of Sanda. It can be reached from there by car or motorbike, or a pleasant walk down a traditional two-track concrete plantation road through a spectacular scenery of rice fields and plantations, and Mount Batukaru as backdrop.
Sanda is located in the central Bali’s Pupuan district, along Bali’s north-south road connecting Soka Beach in the south and Seririt (and Lovina) in the north. It is a 1.5 to 2 hour scenic drive from Bali’s southern tourist hub, Lovina as well as Munduk and the lakes around Bedugul.
Note: cars with a relative wide wheel-base might have a challenge navigating the plantation roads. If you’re not an experienced and confident driver we recommend to contact us in advance. We may either accompany you from the main road, or make an alternative arrangement to get to the Hideaway.
